Please provide a brief update on your progress toward your proposed CWB goals in the last reporting period:
UHAB began offering Co-op University in Chicago this month. Our first two session were well attended, in fact, the registration understates the total attendance since we understand that several additional people attended on other peoples screens. Participants were looking forward to the other 8 2-hour sessions to be offered in 2025. 13 people had preregistered for the 8 classes (which would have totaled 208 additional hours of training). Of course, the contract was not extended so those session will not take place. There is clearly both a need and a desire for ongoing education for co-op leaders and emerging leaders. We continued to make progress contacting leaders of existing co-ops and connecting them to the wider co-op community so that they are reachable for training. We have continued to locate/map these existing affordable and limited-equity co-ops across Chicago. Finally, based on the successful Training for Trainers in November momentum was building for registration for a final Incubator for permanently affordable housing co-ops. We will not be able to offer that training under this contract.
What constraints or limitations, if any, did you experience in the last reporting period?
Lack of all types of financing for co-ops both existing and nascent continues to be a major impediment to building strong vibrant co-ops in Chicago. The lack of an extension to the contract to allow the completion of our work is of course a major impediment. We were looking forward to launching the Affordable Housing Co-op Study Group early in the new year and we hope that some of our Chicago partners will pilot that this coming year.
What opportunities, if any, did you take advantage of in the last reporting period?
We continued to develop contacts with the leadership of existing co-ops and offer training and assess their other needs which, in addition to training, include share and renovation financing.
