CWB Goals

Please provide a brief update on your progress toward your proposed CWB goals in the last reporting period:

In April, Chicago Community and Workers’ Rights (CCWR) supported the development of the following Worker Cooperatives: Cocina Compartida de Trabajadores Cooperativistas (CCTC) and Street Vendors Kitchen (SVK). Our organization also worked with the Street Vendors Association of Chicago (SVAC). Cocina Compartida de Trabajadores Cooperativistas (CCTC) CCWR had three reunions with CCTC in the month of April. Two with the administrative lead team and one with the general assembly. During these meetings, the status of the renovated kitchen building and when it will be ready. It is still currently under construction. A conversation about CCTC members receiving a membership certificate was started because they still have not received one. Street Vendors Kitchen (SVK) Our organization had one reunion in April with the administrative lead team of the Street Vendors Kitchen cooperative. The meeting was with the SVK president about making the payment for the renewal of the cooperative registration, made April 4th. We discussed the next general assembly, which was postponed due to the amount of work SVAC currently has. Street Vendors Association of Chicago (SVAC) CCWR had five meetings with SVAC, one reunion with the administrative lead team, one with the members of the general assembly and three with the new staff hired. For the first time in its history , SVAC hired 4 new staff members. Our organization helped SVAC create job descriptions for those positions. CCWR also had three reunions with SVAC members where they decided to help members pay the training for the kitchen manager. The kitchen search committee for street vendor permits gave their report on the conditions of the 2 kitchens they have rented. Finally, members discussed the opening of the office on May 6th, 2024. In the meetings with new SVAC staff members, CCWR suggested and gave examples of how to do and keep their timesheets and work reports in order. Our organization also gave them workshops on technology as some of the members needed support with creating accounts and using the computer.

What constraints or limitations, if any, did you experience in the last reporting period?

As we have mentioned in the past, we believe that the lack of accountants and lawyers specialized in cooperatives is a need in the state of Illinois since they are very few and saturated.

What opportunities, if any, did you take advantage of in the last reporting period?

Street Vendors Kitchen (SVK) and Street Vendors Association of Chicago (SVAC) are mutually supporting each other with their needs. They will be working together to rent a new kitchen where SVK will act as kitchen administrators and SVAC members who need permits can work out of that kitchen as well.
