In March, Chicago Community and Workers’ Rights (CCWR) supported the development of the following Worker Cooperatives: Cocina Compartida de Trabajadores Cooperativistas (CCTC), Street Vendors Kitchen (SVK), and Cooperativa IDEAL. Our organization also worked with the Street Vendors Association of Chicago (SVAC), and we have conversations with two groups of workers who were interested in learning about workers cooperatives. We gave them information about what a workers' cooperative is and how to form it. They received examples of the New York drivers cooperative, the business plan and the annual report so that they had an idea of the work of this cooperative. Cocina Compartida de Trabajadores Cooperativistas (CCTC) CCWR had four reunions with CCTC in the month of March. Two with the administrative lead team and two with the general assembly. During these meetings, the cooperative members discussed the need to hire a kitchen manager, as well as the responsibilities, requirements and salary. It was also agreed that all members of the board of directors receive a stipend. Members established a calendar of activities and events, and they decided to rent an office. At the general assembly, a member was proposed for the position of General Administrator. Street Vendors Kitchen (SVK) Our organization had two reunions in March with the administrative lead team of Street Vendors Kitchen cooperative. The cooperative members discussed part or of their bylaws, including the official name, place, fiscal year as well as membership. They also talk about renting a space in collaboration with SVAC and CCTC. They also talk about the renewal of cooperative registration that they will do this week. It was decided that the general meeting of members will be held on April 10 for members to vote on the agreements proposed by the administrative lead team Cooperative IDEAL CCWR had one reunion in March with the president and vice president of Cooperativa IDEAL. It was discussed that three of the twelve members were not sure to continue being part of the coop and they will have a conversation with each one of them to decide next steps and to plan the general assembly. Street Vendors Association of Chicago (SVAC) CCWR had five reunions with SVAC, two reunions with the administrative lead team and two with the members of the general assembly. In these meetings the members talked and decided their work plan. They decided to rent an office that will be shared with CCTC and SVK. They also decided to hire four people to work with SVAC: one organizer, one person in charge of the office, and one person in charge of public relations, and development person . The responsibilities for these four positions were discussed and decided, They will be hired at the end of the month.

The members of SVAC pointed out on several occasions their concern about the lack of personnel and lack of services in Spanish in the city of Chicago, where they have to carry out the procedures for their permits. Many of the forms are also in English which makes it more difficult for them to fill out the forms. They also talked about the complexity of the permit requirements. This issue was discussed extensively with them and it was decided to ask the city to provide more services and staff in Spanish.

As CCWR is working with SVAC and the two street vendor cooperatives, the connections between these groups facilitated the possibility of jointly renting a space so that the three organizations could share space and expenses as well as collaborate more with each other. Without this collaboration between these three organizations it would have been difficult for each one to have the resources to pay rent and utilities.
